North American MIDREX Plants Show Strong Operational Performance in 2025
06/25/2026 - MIDREX released its 2025 operations report summary emphasizing the continued expansion and strong operational performance of direct reduced iron (DRI) plants using its technology across the globe, with North American facilities playing an important role.
ArcelorMittal Canada’s DRI operations contributed to the region’s stability, with both its modules operating at over 43% and 56% of their capacity. This was over 90% of their 2018 productive record. The average total iron content in module 2 was the second highest among all MIDREX plants, the report said.
MIDREX reported ArcelorMittal’s Texas hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant achieved a new monthly record in HBI production in September 2025, achieving over 90% of the record achieved in 2023. There has also been a steady improvement in natural gas consumption efficiency since the facility opened in 2016.
Cleveland-Cliffs’ plant in Toledo, Ohio, USA, achieved the highest HBI carbon content among all HBI plants.
