Nucor Begins Production on Primetals Technologies-Supplied CGL

The companies said the CGL is designed to produce exposed automotive-quality steel and advanced high-strength steels used in vehicle components. It can produce galvanized, galvanneal and zinc-aluminum-magnesium coated products. Capacity is estimated at about 500,000 metric tons annually.

“Production of the first prime coil is the result of an outstanding collaboration between Nucor, Primetals Technologies, CLECIM and numerous project partners. This milestone positions Nucor to serve growing demand for advanced automotive steel products,” said Ron Revoe, head of downstream business for Primetals Technologies USA.

Process technologies include Primetals Technologies’ rapid cooling system and a transverse flux induction heating system. The line’s vertical furnace has a radiant tube section and a direct-fired section with MID burner technology. This is the first U.S. application of this in-house combustion system, the companies said.

While Primetals Technologies used expertise from across its global network, its service workshop in Berkeley County supported looper roll installation, furnace rol alignment and fabrication of essential installation components.
