Nucor Taps Primetals Technologies for Continuous Caster Upgrade
07/30/2026 - Primetals Technologies announced it has been selected by Nucor Steel–Decatur to upgrade its continuous thin slab caster at its plant in Decatur, Ala., USA.
The companies said the project’s goal is to upgrade the segments with wider, more robust frames with better spray patterns. The caster is going to be upgraded from a two-roller to a three-roller design for 50% more bearing capacity. The frames will use marine-grade material for better corrosion resistance and longevity.
The scope of supply includes engineering services, two new strand checkers, a lifting device and a comprehensive maintenance service contract. For the next three years, Primetals Technologies said it will supply Nucor Steel–Decatur with benders, segments, rollers, hydraulic cylinders and spray nozzles to ensure successful production.
They intend to implement dynamic soft-core reduction in the future, which the upgrade will allow for, the companies said.
