Nucor Upgrades Tubular Operations

According to Fives, the order includes two Abbey cutoff machines and a Taylor-Wilson packaging system, all bound for Nucor Tubular plants in Marseilles, Ill., and Decatur, Ala., USA.

Fives said the Marseilles plant, which is increasing its structural tube size offerings, will receive one of the cutoff machines and the packaging system.

The cutoff machine will feature plunge and orbital cutting, which, according to Fives, is a first-of-its-kind feature for that type of equipment in the industry. It will be capable of cutting tubes up to 16 inches in diameter with wall thicknesses of up to 0.625 inch. It will operate at speeds of up to 200 feet per minute.

The Decatur plant will receive the other cutoff machine as part of an expansion of its existing tube mill. The machine will be able to cut tubes up to 20 inches in diameter with wall thicknesses of up to 0.625 inch. It will operate at speeds of up to 200 feet per minute and allow for increased reliability and better product quality.

The machines were tested on-site at Fives Bronx workshops in Ohio in the presence of Nucor specialists. According to Fives, both teams discussed project updates, performed test cuts and received hands-on maintenance training during a two-day visit.

“We opened the workshop to strengthen our customer relationships and provide flexibility to serve their needs. With Nucor’s continued trust, we took another step toward success with the factory acceptance testing of a large-scale capital project,” said Carter Dulaney, aftermarket sales manager and workshop operations manager at Fives Bronx Inc.
