Ohio Environmental Regulators OK Cliffs’ Middletown Works Project
10/08/2026 - The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has issued an environmental permit to Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., allowing its US$1 billion modernization of its Middletown Works to proceed.
According to the (Liberty Township, Ohio) Journal-News newspaper, the permit enables Cliffs to build a cogeneration plant that will supply nearly 50% of the facility’s electricity needs and to make improvements to its blast furnace and materials handling system.
The blast furnace work is to be completed in 2030.
