Ontario Mill Switches on New Electric Arc Furnace
12/12/2023 - Brazilian long products maker Gerdau is commissioning an upgraded meltshop at its Whitby, Ont., Canada, facility, according to project contractor Danieli.
In a statement, Danieli said the project took the meltshop’s capacity from 700,000 short tons annually to 1.2 million short tons through replacement of an electric arc furnace.
The new furnace, a Danieli UHP FastArc furnace, has a nominal tap weight of 137 short tons and features a 6,500-mm-diameter lower shell.
The furnace is equipped with a system that reduced electrode consumption, an automatic tap sander, leakage detection system for shell panels, wireless RTD temperature transmitters, and a Motank automatic slag door cleaning ram.
