Outokumpu has inaugurated a dispatch hall in Degerfors, and a grinding machine and a new entry section to the annealing and pickling line in Nyby, Torshälla. The investments, totaling €65 million, are part of the company's strategy to increase sales of special grades and sales to end users.
The dispatch hall is said to be a state-of-the-art, fully automated storage with integrated packaging and dispatch. The trains and trucks that ship the stainless steel are loaded inside the 7500-m2 hall. It can store 4 500 tonnes.
The new grinding machine with an automated intermediate storage and the entry section to the annealing and pickling line in Nyby increases the production capacity for special grades from 34,000 tonnes to more than 70,000 tonnes a year.
"We have a long-term belief in the market for stainless steel, and the investments are a part of this,” said Bo Annvik, Head of Division, Outokumpu Specialty Stainless. “The dispatch hall in Degerfors will increase efficiency and product quality since the operations can now be held indoors. In Nyby, we are removing a bottleneck from the production and can now improve quality even further."
Outokumpu in Degerfors produces stainless thick plates, so-called quarto plates, that are used for bridges, tankers, and desalination plants, for example. Outokumpu in Nyby produces stainless thin strip for, among other applications, heat exchangers and water heaters.
