Peiner Träger Casts Slabs, Beam Blanks on Upgraded Combi-Caster

Peiner Träger GmbH, a company of the Salzgitter Group, has successfully cast its first slabs on an X-Cast® combination continuous caster revamped by SMS Siemag. After a section-size change, the company also cast beam blanks on the revamped caster.

As part of the upgrade, the existing beam blank caster was extended into an X-Cast combination caster capable of producing either steel slabs or beam blanks, as required. Peiner Träger’s continuous caster No. 2 will be Germany’s first combination caster for the casting of beam blanks and slabs.

The X-Cast twin-strand combination caster is designed for the production of slabs with a thickness of 250 mm and widths from 500 to 1100 mm. The combination caster can also produce beam blank sizes with the dimensions 1150 x 490 x 130 mm and 800 x 440 x 130 mm. With the new caster, the world's widest beam blank size will be produced on the beam blank caster.

SMS Siemag’s scope of supply comprises all strand guiding components required for the continuous slab caster, the slab mold as well as the X-Pact® electrical and automation package including the technological process models. Pinch roll units 3 and 4 (driven segments 8 and 9) are used for all casting shapes, so they do not need to be replaced when the section size is changed, which will help Peiner Träger to reduce changing times and increase production.

SMS Siemag also supplied segments for the beam blank caster. A design innovation is the ability to replace segments 3 to 5 by the equipment required for the blow-off device and the edge heater. In total, SMS Siemag has supplied 40 segments.

Peiner Träger placed an additional order with SMS Siemag for the supply of an X-Melt® electric steelmaking plant within the scope of an ambitious investment program. Once this steelworks has been commissioned, scheduled for this year, the company’s current annual capacity of some one million tonnes of steel will be almost doubled while meeting the increased demands placed on the steel quality.

At the Peine location, Peiner Träger produces the world-renowned "Peine Beams", as well as a great many sectional steel grades, such as European steel beams, sheet piling sections and special sections.
