Primetals Technologies Completes Slab Caster Upgrade for thyssenkrupp Steel

The company said that the project separated the casting and rolling line which used to be combined into a caster and hot strip mill. With the new plant, the Duisburg site can now produce grades including multiphase steels, high-strength steels and advanced materials for e-mobility applications. It has an estimated capacity of about 2.3 million metric tons annually.

“Already during the plant's ramp-up phase, the qualitative advantages of the new facility and its potential to produce new grades became apparent. This allowed the planned concept to be validated at a very early stage,” said Chris Lindner, head of upstream operations at thyssenkrupp Steel.

The 2-strand continuous caster No. 4 features the DynaWidth mold width adjustment system, the Dynaflex hydraulic oscillator, a level 2 automation system, CC optimizer with Dynacs 3D and EcoStar.

For quick execution, several components were preassembled and tested before installation. Selected plant components were integrated into the new system with little downtime. At some times, up to 1,000 workers were on-site working on the project, the companies said.
