The companies said the EAF Ultimate will be powered by green energy and produce about 1.6 million metric tons annually. voestalpine is using greentec steel to transition to green steel production as the first step in its phased approach. Both the site in Linz and Donawitz will get new EAFs to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2029. 

“The project is progressing as planned, marking important milestones along the way. Most importantly, staying on track means voestalpine is moving closer each day to realizing its vision of decarbonized steel production,” said Paul Pennerstorfer, head of upstream technologies at Primetals Technologies. 

The scope includes the complete EAF Ultimate equipment, a dedusting system, a waste heat recovery system, a power supply solution, and material handling for alloying materials and additives. Other features will include level 1 and level 2 automation, a power supply system with a static synchronous compensator, and the LiquiRob robotic system. 

Construction and civil work began in late 2024 and is on schedule for start-up in the first half of 2027, the companies said.
