Primetals Technologies Delivers Scrap Cutting Machine to Konepeikko

The new machine will handle scrap including billets, blooms and bundles of rolled bars. It can integrate iron powder into the cutting process to allow for the cutting of tundish skulls, rolling mill rolls and other hard, high-alloy materials.

Konepeikko said the new scrap-cutting machine will allow it to meet the growing industry demand for scrap. As demand grows, effective scrap management supports the transition to green steel production.

“We used to cut scrap with hand-cutting torches, but with this machine, the process is much faster and more operator-friendly. We clearly see the benefits in safer operations, and the camera monitoring feature gives us a good view of the torch-cutting process,” said Ossi Hulkko, foreman at Konepeikko.

Primetals Technologies said its technology has already led to a reduction in noise emissions. The dedusting system keeps dust emissions from the cutting process below regulatory limits. Operators control the machine from a desk outside the cutting cabin supported by a video monitoring system. Predefined cutting programs streamline operations and reduce processing times.

“This is a very good investment for us, and we are a happy customer. The Primetals Technologies team worked closely with us to get the machine up and running on schedule,” said Hulkko.
