Rautaruukki Launches New Super High Strength Structural Steel

Rautaruukki announced it will launch Optim 1500 QC, which the company describes as ‘the world's strongest hot-rolled structural steel’, during Intermat, the construction materials & production industry fair, which will be held this week in Paris.

Ruukki’s new ultra high-strength steel combines extreme strength with good wear resistance, making it ideal for a range of applications such as materials processing and transportation equipment structures. It is produced using Ruukki's unique direct quenching process.

Optim 1500 QC’s strength enables the design of products and equipment of higher performance and load-bearing capability. It also offers high wear resistance, making it suitable for applications where the load-bearing structure is exposed to wear. Typical end uses include hook-lift containers and ultra high-strength structures for transportation equipment.

The new alloy’s strength and high wear resistance also makes it suitable for crushing and screening equipment applications. Use of the material can help to increase equipment payload and lifetime, decrease fuel consumption, and reduce environmental impact.

“Optim 1500 QC shows that Ruukki is a forerunner in ultra high-strength structural steels and wear-resistant steels," said Kari Lehtinen, Senior Vice President for Ruukki Metals. “Our strong material and development know-how will enable new innovations in the future as well. We make product applications in close cooperation with our customers, who benefit from higher performance and more energy efficient, longer-lasting end products.”

Ruukki produces high-strength Optim QC structural steels and hard Raex steels using the direct quenching method.
