Report: Worldwide DRI Production Sets New Record
08/25/2025 - Global direct reduced iron (DRI) production surpassed 140 million metric tons in 2024, reaching a new record, according to Midrex Technologies Inc.
According to furnace builder’s annual tally, production rose to 140.8 million metric tons, up 3.8% from 2023. The company said production growth was primarily driven by Indian rotary kiln-based production, which grew 13.9%.
Proportionally, the amount of coal-based DRI produced in rotary kilns has been gaining ground, driven by production in India. Since 2019, Indian coal-based rotary kiln DRI production has risen increased by nearly 20 million metric tons, or 76.5%, Midrex said.
