Ruukki to Negotiate Temporary Layoffs at Kalajoki

Ruukki is initiating employer-employee negotiations to temporarily lay off employees at its Kalajoki plant in Finland, which manufactures components for the engineering industry. The workforce will be scaled down later this year, in line with lower-than-expected demand for its products.

The negotiations will affect all 108 employees at Kalajoki; a maximum of 40 workers and five salaried employees are expected to be laid off at any one time. The company said the extent and duration of the layoffs would become clear as negotiations progress.

Rautaruukki, which uses the marketing name Ruukki, supplies metal-based components, systems, and integrated systems to the construction and engineering industries. The company has a wide selection of metal products and services. It has operations in 26 countries and employs 13,000 people. Net sales in 2008 totaled EUR 3.9 billion.
