Ruukki to Supply Steel Frame, Envelope Structures for Shopping Center in Finland

Rautaruukki has signed significant delivery contracts with Kesko for the design, manufacture and installation of the steel frame and envelope structures for the Tervaskangas shopping center in Kouvola, Finland. The contracts are worth a total of around EUR 6 million.

The new shopping center will be the sixth largest in all of Finland when it is completed in 2012. The shopping center will have a total of 48,000 square meters of sales area spread over two stories and will house some 90 stores. When completed, the shopping center will provide jobs for about 1,000 people.

Ruukki's delivery for the shopping center includes the steel frame solution, load-bearing sheets and Ruukki Panel envelopes. Delivery will last about 10 months.

"The contract is an important one for us,” said Sami Eronen, SVP, Building Projects, Ruukki Construction. “Ruukki's solutions enable open, user-friendly space arrangements. In addition, the VTT certificate awarded to Ruukki ensures fire-safe design solutions.

“In the envelope solution, Ruukki will use its energy-efficient Panel system for the project,” added Eronen.

Ruukki's prefabricated products will help to considerably shorten the time for project construction. The steel structures for the frame are mainly being made at Ruukki's plant in Peräseinäjoki, the envelope panels at the Alajärvi plant and load-bearing sheets at the Vimpeli plant in Finland.

"Kesko and Ruukki have already worked well together in projects to design and implement frame and envelope structure solutions for a number of K-rauta building and home improvement stores,” said Timo Heikkilä, Kesko's District Director for Southeastern Finland. “The Tervaskangas project is one of our largest individual retail store investments, with a total value of about EUR 100 million.

“For us, it's important that the project has excellently taken into account energy efficiency and fire safety among other things,” added Heikkilä. “The model also enables diverse use of the building in different stages of its lifecycle.”
