Ruukki to Supply Steel Structures for New Arena

Ruukki has signed a contract with Peab for the manufacture and installation of steel structures and roofing elements for a new multipurpose stadium in Stockholm, Sweden. The order is worth a total of about EUR 20 million.

Swedish National Arena (Swedbank Arena) will be one of the biggest stadiums in Northern Europe to feature a sliding roof, the company notes. When completed in 2012, the arena will have a capacity of 50,000 for football matches and 65,000 for concerts and other events.

Ruukki says that the design has been specially engineered to minimize welding at the site. The components will be manufactured mainly at Ruukki's units in Ylivieska and Peräseinäjoki, Finland, and bolted together at the construction stage.

Ruukki plans to begin deliveries to the site in June 2010 and estimates that they will continue until August 2011.

"Ruukki has a strong foothold in the Nordic construction market as a steel constructor who creates added value for customers with its competence in design and installation. We have sound experience of project deliveries for large multipurpose complexes and sports arenas," said Sami Eronen, SVP, Infrastructure and Northern Europe, Ruukki Construction.

The company’s latest such projects include Malmö Arena and the Swedbank Stadion in Malmö, Sweden.
