SAIL, PT Krakatau Steel Look to Form Partnership to Manufacture Stainless Steel
07/15/2026 - The Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) and PT Krakatau Steel Tbk announced they signed an agreement to look into establishing a joint venture to manufacture stainless steel slabs in Indonesia.
The companies said they hope to use the project to expand industrial cooperation between India and Indonesia. It is expected to support growing demand for stainless steel in India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region while promoting technology transfer, skill development and economic growth.
“The initiative represents more than an expansion into the stainless steel value chain. It is aimed at developing resilient supply chains, enhancing resource security and supporting India's vision of becoming a globally competitive manufacturing economy under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative,” said Ashok Kumar Panda, chairman and managing director of SAIL.
The details of the project are subject to completion of the feasibility studies and receipt of all necessary approvals, the companies said.
