SAIL Okays Two More Processing Units, One Industrial Training Unit
10/23/2008 - The Steel Authority of India Limited Board grants approval in principle for the installation of two more steel processing units plus an Industrial Training Institute at Samastipur in Bihar to help with local skill development.
The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) Board has granted its approval in principle for the installation of additional Steel Processing Units at Nahan in Himachal Pradesh and Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. The Board granted its approval during a meeting held earlier this week.
The new steel processing units are to be set up in addition to the nine units for which the SAIL Board had previously granted in-principle approval. The investments are part of SAIL’s plan to set up new units in states where it does not have steel plants and where steel consumption is low as compared to the national average. With this initiative, SAIL is striving to make steel available to consumers in interior areas of the country and thus directly serve a large number of small consumers.
SAIL’s nine other processing units are under construction or already installed in Bettiah, Mahnar and Gaya in Bihar, Hoshangabad, Ujjain and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, Guwahati in Assam, Srinagar in Jammu & Kashmir and Sitapur/Lakhimpur in Uttar Pradesh. Products from these units will be mainly used for construction purposes, both industrial and individual.
The SAIL Board has also accorded in-principle approval under its Corporate Social Responsibility program for setting up an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Samastipur in Bihar to help in skill development of the youth in remote areas. SAIL is already providing support to some ITIs in Jharkhand, Meghalaya, and other locations.
The institute in Samastipur will be developed in two phases, with work likely to start immediately. The first phase comprises construction of classrooms, library, workshops, administrative building, etc., capable of supporting up to 120 students for an investment of over Rs. 10 crore. In the second phase, the ITI will be further expanded to accommodate an up to 160 students from the region.
SAIL is already discussing the issue with Bihar government officials, who have been requested to take over the running and maintenance of the institute after its construction.
