SAIL to Supply Zojila Tunnel Project
07/21/2025 - India’s largest steelmaking Maharatna public sector undertaking, Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), will be the largest steel supplier for the Zojila Tunnel project, India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bidirectional tunnel.
The company said it has supplied over 31,000 metric tons of steel including TMT rebars, structurals and plates so far. SAIL will continue to supply steel to the project as it aims for a 2027 completion.
The tunnel is being constructed at an altitude of 11,578 ft. in the challenging Himalayan terrain. More than 30 km of tunnel will connect Srinagar and Leh via Dras and Kargil in all weather conditions. The company said the project will enhance civilian and military mobility in the region.
In the past, SAIL has supported other infrastructure projects including the Chenab Railway Bridge, Atal Tunnel, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and the Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel bridges.
