Salzgitter Accepting Proposals for Green Energy Projects

The company is inviting proposals for a ground-mounted, 150-MW array as part of a long-term power purchase agreement as well as for for the construction and operation of a large-scale, on-site battery storage system serving the Salzgitter Flachstahl steel location.

The projects are part of Salzgitter’s low-CO2 steel production program (SALCOS), which aims to incrementally convert primary steel production at the integrated steelworks to low-CO2 processes.

“Within the context of the transformation, the existing carbon-based production process will be replaced by a new steel production route based on renewable energies. Once this technological transition has been completed, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH will be able to eliminate around 95% of its direct CO2 emissions,” the company said.
