Salzgitter AG, Volvo Cars Partner for ScanLoop Project

Salzgitter Group said that it supplies Volvo Cars body parts plant in Olofström, Sweden, with flat steels. With the ScanLoop project, the steel scrap produced there will be returned to the production of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.

"The cooperation is a clear confirmation of our circularity strategy. It shows how industrial partnerships can contribute to resource efficiency and the decarbonization of the value chain,” said Sandrina Sieverdingbeck, managing director of DEUMU Deutsche Erz- und Metall-Union.

After the steel and aluminum off-cuts are separated into different material streams and segregated, they are compressed into cubes. The train is filled with steel scrap before returning to Salzgitter and processing into steel grades. The companies said the first train with 25 scrap wagons and 545 m long arrived at Beddington station last week.

By using the rail network, emissions have been reduced. There is a 700 km route between the locations which is powered by 100% carbon neutral electricity, the companies said.
