Salzgitter AG Turns to Tenova for Biggest EAF in Germany
07/30/2026 - Salzgitter AG announced its subsidiary, Hüttenwerke Krupp-Mannesmann GmbH (HKM), has contracted Tenova for an electric arc furnace (EAF) and auxiliary facilities for its site in Duisburg, Germany.
The company said the new EAF will be the largest in Germany and the second biggest in the EU. It will have a tapping weight of 285 metric tons and a capacity of about 2.5 million metric tons annually. It will feature Consteel® technology and scrap will be fed into the system continuously using a conveyor belt system. It can be fed by various raw materials including sponge iron and steel scrap.
“The electric arc furnace at HKM will be the most powerful and energy-efficient in Germany, while the adoption of this advanced technology marks one of the most significant transformation projects in the European steel industry, demonstrating that industrial competitiveness and decarbonization can successfully go hand in hand,” said Markus Dorndorf, managing director of Tenova Projects GmbH.
The scope of supply also includes the conveyor belt-fed scrap supply system, the furnace transformer, the water management system, a transformer, other plant components and the exhaust gas treatment system.
“With the electric arc furnace, we are laying the foundation for sustainable and competitive steel production at HKM and strengthening our position as a leading supplier of green steel for industrial value chains,” said Gunnar Groebler, chairman of the executive board of Salzgitter AG.
The federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia are giving the project €200 million in funding as part of the “Federal Funding for Industry and Climate Action” program.
“Funding from the federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia also sends an important signal in terms of Germany’s industrial transformation. Now we're moving forward with implementation without any further delay,” said Andreas Betzler, spokesperson for HKM’s management.
The project will begin in August 2026, with the EAF scheduled to be complete in 2029, the companies said.
