Salzgitter Celebrates Groundbreaking for Shredder Plant
09/02/2025 - Salzgitter AG held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new €30 million large-scale shredder plant for steel scrap on the premises of its subsidiary, DEUMU Deutsche Erz-und Metall-Union GmbH.
The company said the plant will process high-quality scrap grades from the quantities of old scrap that accumulate. The structural steel for the welded parts of the 112-metric-ton shredder will come mostly from Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH, another Salzgitter AG subsidiary.
“The construction of the new large shredder is a significant step towards making even better use of existing secondary raw materials such as scrap,” said Sandrina Sieverdingbeck, managing director of DEUMU.
Salzgitter Group said it is investing now since the SALCOS® - Salzgitter AG Low CO2 Steelmaking program will begin production in the first half of 2027. DEUMU has worked with internal partners from research and production to develop the 4 SALCOS scrap grade.
Commissioning of the new unit coincides with the launch of the first stage of SALCOS.
