Salzgitter Group’s SECURE 500® Protection Steel Approved for Military Use

The company said that SECURE 500 in 6-16 mm dimensions meet the requirements of technical delivery conditions (TL) 2350-000 and has therefore received approval from the German Military Technical Center 91. This includes using it in military items such as vehicles or protective systems.

“As a steel and technology group, we see it as our responsibility to make our contribution to the defense capability of our society in the form of steel for protection and armor purposes,” said Thorsten Moellmann, head of corporate communications for Salzgitter Group and responsible for the company’s defense task force.

The testing included evaluating weldability and behavior under fire and blast, along with other aspects. A prerequisite for protection against ballistic threats is a high level of steel hardness; the greater the hardness, the better the protection capability against ballistic attacks, the company said.

“Our SECURE 500 steels are quenched and tempered and feature a fine martensitic microstructure. With the granting of TL approval, these steels are now also approved for use by the German Armed Forces – this is a great success after extensive testing,” said Thorsten Gintaut, managing director of sales for Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH.

Salzgitter AG is currently in the approval process for several other steel grades for military applications, pending final assessment by the German Armed Forces.
