Shougang Group, Rio Tinto Complete Trial Facility

The companies said the facility can capture CO2 contained in blast furnace gas produced during ironmaking. It can process up to 3,000 cubic meters of gas per hour from Shougang’s Jingtang base, amounting to about 10,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.

“The project has effectively addressed key challenges associated with carbon reduction in the blast furnace process and serves as an important example of our commitment to China’s dual-carbon goals and the advancement of low-carbon, green development,” said Zhu Guosen, vice president of Shougang Group.

The facility has been integrated into Shougang’s ironmaking production system and will continue to operate for trial and research. The companies said they are also exploring ways to use the captured CO2 including converting it into syngas that can be recycled back into the steelmaking process.

“Looking ahead, we will continue to optimize the technology, advance the utilization of captured carbon resources, and contribute to the green and low-carbon transformation of the steel industry,” Guosen continued.
