Siemens to Equip New Steel Mill for Qatar Steel

The Qatar Steel Company awarded a contract to Siemens VAI Metals Technologies for the supply of process technology for a new steel mill in Mesaieed, Qatar. The order includes melting furnaces, a continuous billet caster and a dedusting plant.

The plant systems were originally intended to replace old equipment in the existing steel mill, a project awarded to Siemens in summer 2010. However, growing demand for steel in the Gulf region has prompted the company to change plans, now installing the new equipment in a newly constructed steel mill, and upgrading the design for higher production capacity. As a result of this expansion, the total contract volume has risen to a mid-range double-digit million euro figure.

The new steel mill in Mesaieed Industrial City will be designed for an annual billet production output of roughly 1.1 million tonnes. Siemens will equip it with a 110-tonne electric arc furnace, a 110-tonne ladle furnace, a six-strand continuous billet caster and auxiliary plant systems, as well as a new dedusting plant that will significantly reduce emissions from the steelmaking plant. The new steel mill is characterized by low specific consumption in areas such as electrodes, electrical power and utilities.

Construction of the new mill is being executed in a collaborative effort between Siemens VAI Metals Technologies and Siemens W.L.L. Qatar. It is scheduled to go into operation during the first quarter of 2013.

Qatar Steel Company is among the leading steelmakers in the Gulf region. Since 1974, the company is operating a steel mill in Mesaieed Industrial City, which is located approximately 50 kilometers south of Doha, the capital of Qatar. The newly constructed mill is intended to meet the increasing demand for structural steels in the Gulf region and contribute to the planned infrastructural expansion in the State of Qatar.
