Siemens to Provide Heavy Plate Mill for Hunan Valin’s Xiangtan Facility

10/22/2008 - Hunan Valin Xiangtan Iron & Steel commissions Siemens VAI to engineer and supply equipment for a new five-meter plate rolling mill for its Xiangtan facility.

Hunan Valin Xiangtan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., China, has commissioned Siemens VAI Metals Technologies to engineer and supply equipment for a new five-meter plate rolling mill for the Xiangtan facility, which is located in Hunan, a central province of China. The volume of the contract is in the two-digit million euro range.
 
Hunan Valin Xiangtan is investing in the new plate mill in order to expand its range of products. With the new plate mill, it will add high-quality, wide heavy plate for ship-building and pipeline construction
 
Siemens VAI will engineer and supply the main components of the two-stand rolling mill, including mechanical equipment for the roughing and finishing stands, a Mulpic intensive cooling section, hot and cold levelers, and a shearing line with double-side trimming and dividing shears. Siemens VAI’s scope of supply also includes all instrumentation and the entire automation system, including all process models.

The new mill will be the first application of Siemens’ own microstructure monitor, which was originally developed for use in hot rolling mills. The monitor will make it possible to reliably determine the mechanical properties of the heavy plate via online calculation.
 
The main drives of the mill’s finishing stand will be fitted with synchronous motors, which will be powered by Sinamics SM150 DC link converters. The high-pressure pumps for the plant’s descalers will be fitted with variable-speed drives for the first time, thus saving energy and reducing water consumption. The overall solution for the rolling line is based on the integrated Siroll PM concept for plate mills.
 
Siemens will also be responsible for supervising the installation work and commissioning, as well as carrying out training.
 
The new project follows ongoing, Siemens’ engineering, supply and startup of the automation system for Xiangtan’s Plate Rolling Mill No. 2. The new plate mill—Siemens’ third complete plate rolling mill order from China this year—is to start production in 2010.
