Siemens to Supply Four Long-Product Casters for SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) recently placed a major order with Siemens VAI Metals Technologies for the supply of four long-product casters to be installed at its Bhilai Steel Plant. The order volume is in the three-digit-million-euro range.

The new casters are part of a modernization and 7.0 million tonnes/year steel capacity expansion project underway at SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant. Siemens VAI will provide basic and detail engineering as well as the equipment for two new 6-strand billet casters, one new 6-strand billet/bloom combination-caster, and one new 3-strand beam-blank caster.

The two billet casters, designed for open and submerged casting, will be capable of casting section sizes of 105x105 mm and 150x150 mm for the production of rebars and high-quality steels. Grades will comprise forging quality, high-carbon, cold-heading, spring-steel, electrode-quality and alloyed construction-steel grades.

The billet/bloom combination caster will be capable of producing billet section sizes of 150x150 mm and bloom section sizes of 335x300 mm from carbon steel, alloyed steel grades, and especially rail grades. A hot-charging roller table will transport the cast billets to a reheat furnace in preparation for rolling.

The beam-blank caster will be capable of producing sections with sizes of 405x285x90 mm, 620x440x100 mm and 1024x390x90 mm. The cast beam blanks will be directly charged in the hot condition to the rolling mill, which will help to considerably reduce energy costs.

Siemens VAI will supply caster equipment incorporating the latest design features, including ladle turrets, tundish cars, nozzle-changing devices for open-stream casting, and stopper rods for submerged casting. Siemens VAI will also supply Dynaflex hydraulic oscillators, Diamold high-speed tube molds, advanced electromagnetic mold-stirring systems (EMS), and cassette-type withdrawal and straightening units, as well as torch-cutting machines, an automatic deburrer, a marking machine and several cooling beds. Siemens VAI’s scope of supply will also include Level 1 and Level 2 automation, electrical equipment, and complete coolant and hydraulics systems, as well as training and advisory services for erection and commissioning for all four casters.

Installation of the new casters is scheduled for completion in the last quarter of 2011.
