Siemens to Supply Roughing Stand and Cooling Bed for Wuyang Plate Mill Expansion

Wuyang Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., China, has commissioned Siemens Metals Technologies to supply a new roughing mill stand and cooling bed for the Phase 2 expansion of their 4100-mm wide plate mill.

The new roughing mill will have a rolling load of 8600 tonnes and will incorporate hydraulic gauge control cylinders and a Mae West work-roll balance system. The new stand will incorporate a design that is very similar to the existing finishing mill stand, thus enabling rationalization of many parts between the stands.

In addition to the new roughing mill stand, Siemens will install a new walking beam cooling bed parallel to the existing cooling bed. This addition will enable an increase in production from 1.0 million to 1.8 million tonnes per year. Production will focus on plate for the shipbuilding, pipe line, boiler and high-strength construction industries in China.

Siemens’ scope of supply includes design of the mechanical equipment, supply of key mechanical components, and quality supervision of the Chinese-manufactured equipment. Siemens will also supply Level 1 and Level 2 automation for the new roughing mill stand, and will be responsible for supervision of equipment installation and commissioning. All the new equipment will be integrated into the mechanical and automation systems which Siemens supplied in Phase 1.

The company’s plate mill, also supplied by Siemens, commenced rolling plates in February 2007, and the plant is now in the final stages of hot commissioning. The Phase 2 expansion project is scheduled to be complete by January 2009.
