Siemens to Upgrade Automation for Hyundai Steel Compact Strip Mill

Hyundai Steel Co, Seoul, Korea, has placed an order with Siemens Metals Technologies to equip parts of its compact hot strip mill in Dangjin with new automation. Hyundai Steel’s goals for this modernization measure include enhanced product quality, extending the facility’s range of products, and increasing plant availability.

Hyundai Steel produces various types of carbon and API steel from its Dangjin compact hot strip mill, which has a capacity of 2 million tonnes per year. Siemens will supply and install basic automation, including the technological control system, as well as process automation, including PCFC for the six-stand finishing mill and the cooling section of the compact hot strip mill.

The upgrade will feature automation equipment that is part of Siemens VAI’s “Siroll HM” solution, which was developed specifically for compact hot strip mills. Basic automation will be based on Simatic TDC and the WinCC visualization, and HP computers will be provided for process automation. Online process models will generate the presettings for the finishing mill and the cooling section, and will also supply parameters for online control and adjustment algorithms that will operate while production is underway. Siemens will also supply model predicative controllers for the finishing mill and the cooling section.

The new automation system will mean that the plant will be able to precisely roll and cool modern steel grades. The uniform, integrated system features a high degree of standardization with integrated diagnostic functions to ensure a high level of transparency, straightforward operator control, and quick response in the event of any faults. The Siemens solution will also feature open communication protocols, thus facilitating future expansion of the equipment.

Siemens Metals Technologies is also responsible for project management and engineering of the systems and components as well as of installation supervision and full commissioning.

This is Hyundai Steel’s fourth order with Siemens since recommissioning of the plant in 2005 following a six-year shutdown. Siemens previously (2006) upgraded automation equipment in the coiler area for Hyundai Steel. The company also ordered three casters from Siemens VAI in 2007 that are currently under construction.

The first coil is scheduled to be rolled on the upgraded compact hot strip mill in September 2010.

With three production sites in Korea, Hyundai Steel currently produces a total of approximately fourteen million tonnes of steels per year comprising carbon steel products, including reinforcing bars, angles, channels, wide-flange beams, H-beams, I-beams, rails, including light rails and elevator guide rails; casting and ingots, and cold- and hot-rolled steels.
