SMS Demag to Revamp Salzgitter Flachstahl Hot Strip Mill
12/28/2007 - SMS Demag’s modernization of Salzgitter Flachstahl’s hot strip mill will include comprises extensive revamping of the roughing and finishing trains, plus the installation of new gears and a new coiler and coil conveyor system.
Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, Germany, has placed an order with SMS Demag to modernize its hot strip mill. The order comprises extensive revamping work on the roughing and finishing trains, as well as the installation of new gears, supply of a new coiler and coil conveyor system, and automation of the new mechanical equipment and the complete coiler system.
The upgrade will allow Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH to increase its production capacity to 4.5 million tonnes/year, and to enlarge its maximum finished strip width to 2000 mm.
For the roughing train, SMS Demag will increase the opening dimensions of the side guards and the edging stand. The finishing train’s stands are to be supplied with new entry and exit guides plus differential-tension loopers. Stand F1 will be equipped with the CVC plus® system, which means that all finishing stands will now have this technology. Cooling systems in the interstand area will be replaced, and new fume suppression systems will be installed in the rearmost stands. New spur gear units will be installed for stands F1 to F4 to help reinforce the finishing train’s main drives.
A new coiler and coil removal system will also be installed, along with the necessary automation, to help extend the line’s coiler system. The new UNI plus coiler is designed for winding high-strength tube steels up to a thickness of 25.4 mm. For the existing coilers, SMS Demag will renew the complete automation.
SMS Demag’s scope of supply also includes renewal of the cooling circuit’s water treatment station in order to satisfy stricter requirements for water volumes and quality.
SMS Demag has adapted the time schedule for revamping of the main drives. The revamp project will be commenced by Salzgitter Flachstahl in the spring of 2009, which enables SMS Demag to perform the modernization without need for additional production stoppages.
The revamp is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010.
