SMS Demag to Supply HCl Plant for ThyssenKrupp Steel USA

ThyssenKrupp Steel USA has awarded SMS Demag Process Technologies an order to supply the world’s largest hydrochloric acid regeneration plant for its new integrated rolling mill in Calvert, Ala.

The new plant will recondition 150,000 m3 of contaminated hydrochloric acid the plant will produce as it chemically descales 4 million tons of hot-rolled plates each year. The descaling line will run in a closed circuit, operating continuously with the future-oriented hydrothermal reactor technology.

In addition to low emission values, this plant will be distinguished by considerable savings in energy consumption and by low operating and maintenance costs. The plant is setting new standards regarding both Return on Investment and environmental compatibility.

The SMS Demag-developed process will allow the facility to isolate the by-product iron oxide from the acid recovery in many different forms. Examples include micro-particles with a particularly high specific surface area and dust-free, smeltable granulate.

ThyssenKrupp and SMS Demag have agreed to cooperate closely on further development and marketing of the new process. Customers will thus have reliable access to SMS Demag’s plant engineering expertise as well as ThyssenKrupp Steel USA’s operational know-how.

“We have been able to obtain ThyssenKrupp Steel USA as a partner for the large-scale industrial introduction of this pioneering technology and we are convinced that with our new product we have found an excellent answer to many burning questions posed by customers in our niche market,“ stated both Managing Directors Horst Krenn and Herbert Weissenbaeck.

Commissioning of the new acid regeneration plant is scheduled to take place in April 2010.
