SMS Demag to Supply Twin-Strand Slab Caster for Siderar
03/16/2009 - Siderar SAIC awards contract to SMS Demag for the supply of a two-strand continuous slab caster for its San Nicolás Works in the Buenos Aires region.
Siderar SAIC, Argentina, recently awarded a contract to SMS Demag for the supply of a two-strand continuous slab caster for its San Nicolás (Buenos Aires) Works.
The caster will be rated for the production of 200 or 250 mm thick slabs ranging in width from 750 to 1900 mm. At a maximum casting speed of 1.8 meters/minute the unit will produce 2.3 million tonnes of slabs per year.
To ensure optimal productivity and slab quality, SMS Demag will equip the caster with its Intelligent Slab Casting (ISC®) facilities, including the hydraulically powered resonance oscillation unit and mold with remote-controlled narrow sides for changing the slab width during casting.
The horizontal part of the strand guiding system will include position-controlled CYBERLINK segments. the caster will also employee Dynamic Soft Reduction combined with the metallurgical process model Dynamic Solidification Calculation (DSC) to control secondary cooling and minimize segregation.
SMS Demag's scope includes the engineering, supply of mechanical core components, X-Pact® electrical equipment, and automation system, and commissioning according to its "Plug & Work“ concept.
The new facility will allow Siderar to fully utilize the capacity of the San Nicolás) Works’ upstream steelmaking plants and increase its production capacity for low and medium-carbon steels and peritectic grades. The facility currently operates an SMS Demag supplied and modernized BOF steelmaking plant and continuous caster at the same (San Nicolás) Works.
Commissioning of the new caster is scheduled for early 2010.
With the Hylsa and IMSA (Mexico), Siderar (Argentina), and Sidor (Venezuela) works, Ternium SA, which is owned by Techint, combines its activities for the production of long and flat products.
