SMS Demag to Supply X-Roll Cold Mill for ThyssenKrupp AST

04/22/2008 - SMS Demag will supply a new 20-roll cold rolling mill to ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali in Terni, Italy, for the production of stainless steel strip; ABB will supply the electrical equipment.

ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali in Terni, Italy, has awarded a contract to SMS Demag for the supply of a new 20-roll cold rolling mill for the production of stainless steel strip.
 
The 20-roll mill stand will be designed for a maximum rolling force of 16,000 kN and a maximum rolling speed of 800 meters/minute. The mill will produce stainless steel strips with high surface qualities in grades including AISI 400 (ferrite) and AISI 300 (austenite).
 
SMS Demag’s scope of supply includes a MonoBlock-design 20-roll mill stand, two reversing reels with 600 kN maximum strip tension, and an uncoiling station for minimizing non-productive times. SMS Demag will also provide the design, manufacture, erection, and commissioning of mechanical components, including auxiliary systems such as hydraulic, rolling oil, and fume exhaust systems. ABB will supply the electrical equipment.
 
With a total installed drive power of 16,900 kW, the new plant will roll hot strip (annealed and pickled) with entry gages of up to 8.0 mm and strip widths ranging from 900 to 1575 mm down to final gages of 0.3 mm. The mill will be designed for an annual capacity of around 150,000 tonnes.
 
SMS Demag will carry out extensive preassembly in the SMS Demag workshop in Hilchenbach. Combined with the mill’s modular design, the preassembly work will help to ensure high product quality as well as short commissioning and run-up curves.
