SMS group Bags Order for HYUNDAI-POSCO Mill
05/12/2026 - SMS group has been awarded a contract to build the rolling mills for the planned HYUNDAI-POSCO flat products mill in Louisiana.
According to SMS group, the order consists of a hot strip mill, a pickling line and tandem cold mill, an acid regeneration plant, and product handling equipment.
“With this order, SMS group underscores its leading position as an expert and preferred supplier of integrated solutions for large rolling mills in North America,” said SMS group sales director Steffen Krausa.
SMS group said the hot mill will be capable of annually producing 2.8 million metric tons of sheet in widths up to 1,900 mm. It will produce thicknesses ranging from 1.2 mm to 25.4 mm.
The mill will consist of a 4-high roughing mill with a slab sizing press and a vertical edger; a 7-stand finishing mill fitted with continuous variable crown technology and laminar cooling; and a double downcoiler section.
The turbulence pickling line and 5-stand, 6-high tandem cold rolling mill will be set up to produce nearly 2 million metric tons of cold strip annually.
The high-performance pickling section includes a laser welder and a turret-type sidetrimmer and can be operated in standalone pickling mode, offering the ability to make 112,000 metric tons of pickled-and-oiled hot-rolled coils annually.
Geared for sophisticated automotive grades, the he cold mill will be set up to produce strip in widths of up to 1,850 mm and thicknesses ranging from 0.4 to 3.5 mm. It will feature a fully continuous exit section with a carousel reel and an in-line surface inspection station.
