SMS group Installs TPDS at U. S. Steel – Gary Works’ Blast Furnace No. 14
10/27/2026 - United States Steel Corporation had a Paul Wurth tuyere phenomena detection system (TPDS) installed and commissioned by SMS group on its blast furnace No. 14 in Gary, Ind., USA, the company announced.
The companies said the TPDS monitors operating conditions at the tuyeres of a blast furnace; blast furnace No. 14 is equipped with 34 tuyeres. The system gives operators a clearer and safer view of tuyere conditions from the control room.
“TPDS is for us the optimal solution as it offers a remote view of tuyere conditions and supports prediction of some phenomena thus allowing us a safer and more efficient control of our furnace,” said Brian Hynes, project manager at U. S. Steel – Gary Works.
The system has both digital visualization and monitoring to reduce needing manual checks and to detect unplanned issues. TPDS combines blockage detection with a raceway model to support operators identifying abnormal tuyere and raceway behavior quicker and more efficiently, the companies said.
“The strong teamwork throughout the project enabled us to meet the tight deadlines and successfully complete commissioning. With the TPDS installed, furnace operations are now safer and maintenance is easier to manage,” said Pierre Van Dorpe, project manager at U. S. Steel – Gary Works.
