SMS group Successfully Modernizes Hyundai Steel’s Continuous Galvanizing Line
03/30/2026 - SMS group announced it has been given the final acceptance certificate from Hyundai Steel for modernizing its continuous galvanizing line #1 at the Dangjin plant in Korea.
The companies said the project included modernizing both the mechanical and automation systems to improve processing stability and extend the lifetime and capabilities of the line. The upgrade was implemented in two phases.
In the first phase, they focused on enhancing downstream equipment including a strip washer and strip dryer along with optimized bridle roll sets, motors and drives. It also featured X Pact® Line Drive Control.
The second phase focused on the technological modernization of the skinpass mill. This included upgrades to the technological control system and integration of the latest X Pact embedded controller. They also supplied new hydraulic blocks and servovalves for the hydraulic gap control and work roll bending, the companies said.
“The final acceptance represents another significant step in our long-standing cooperation with SMS group. Their long-term expertise, dating back to the original conversion of our line, has proven valuable once again. The latest modernization further strengthens our production capabilities and supports our focus on quality and efficiency,” said Jin-Hyeong Park, senior manager of the cold rolling maintenance team at Hyundai Steel.
SMS group said its automation team allowed for fast commissioning without many software adaptations. This marks the latest project between the companies that have been partners since 2005.
