According to SMS group, the project goal is to increase the 8-strand casting machine’s capacity to 1 million metric tons annually and to enhance the product quality, productivity and flexibility.

“The upgrade covers a comprehensive redesign of (the No. 2 caster) making it one of the most modern casting installations worldwide and featuring Dynamic Mechanical Soft Reduction, among other highlights, to improve the inner quality of the billets by precisely controlling the central porosity and segregation,” the company said.

Project completion is set for June 2026.

“This modernization reinforces the long-standing partnership between the two companies and marks a significant step in upgrading Jiyuan’s billet production capabilities,” said Henan Jiyuan Iron and Steel chairman Li Yutian.
