SMS group Taps Systems Spray-Cooled to Supply Equipment for SSAB’s EAF Project
10/17/2025 - SMS group has tapped Systems Spray-Cooled of The Systems Group for design and supply of Spray-Cooled™ equipment for SSAB’s new electric arc furnace (EAF) in Oxelösund, Sweden.
Part of SMS group’s awarded contract from SSAB was one 190-metric-ton state-of-the-art AC furnace. The EAF will use spray-cooling for the upper shell, roof and fume elbow. It will also use the direct evacuation control system featuring a movable D1 downcomer duct and panelized dropout chamber (DOC), the companies said.
The EAF has a gantry-style roof with a steep cone hot face profile for optimization and extended lifetime. The D1 downcomer is hydraulically actuated on a fixed rail support system to allow real-time air gap adjustment and swing clearance. The DOC has a panelized, self-support design with multiple sidewall and roof panel segments with an access door for cleanout.
The companies said SSAB decided to use Spray-Cooled equipment to ensure the safest and most reliable solution in consideration of long-term maintenance costs.
