SMS group Upgrades Yamato Steel’s Heavy Section Mill
10/02/2025 - SMS group will provide new compact cartridge mill stands (CCS®) to upgrade beams and structural steel manufacturer Yamato Steel’s heavy section mill in Himeji, Japan.
SMS group said the project involves upgrading the existing universal roughing and edger mill stands with its CCS technology. SMS will provide the full scope of supply including engineering, core equipment, automation, technical assistance, spare parts and changing parts.
The upgrades include the CCS 1000 and CCS 500 E mill stands, engineered to produce products including H- and I-beams, and U-type sheet piles. SMS group will also supply the CCS tandem rolling mill control system for automatic gap control and automatic roll gap after program changes.
The new mill stands have universal and 2-high rolling modes, hydraulic roll adjustment and quick automatic change facilities. It will also incorporate new work roller tables with flange cooling and high-pressure descaling units.
Yamato Steel said the upgrade will enhance its operational capabilities and strengthen its position among Japanese structural and sheet pile producers.
The modernization is expected to be completed by the summer of 2028.
