SMS Meer to Supply New Roughing Stand for Stahlwerk Thüringen Mill

Stahlwerk Thüringen GmbH, a company of the Spanish Grupo Alfonso Gallardo, has placed an order with SMS Meer for a new roughing stand for its long product mill in Unterwellenborn, Germany.
 
SMS Meer will replace Stahlwerk Thüringen’s existing breakdown stand, which has been in operation since 1985. The new, more flexible stand will allow the facility to accommodate continuously growing demand on the breadth of the product range by enabling efficient, more profitable production of heavier and larger sections.
 
The new stand will be designed for a rolling force of 10,000 kN and a drive power of 4400 kW. Technical features will include automatic roll gap opening in the event of an overload, semiautomatic axial shifting of the top roll for pass adjustment, and significantly simplified roll changing.
 
In addition to installation of the new roughing stand, the rolling mill upgrade will also encompass replacement of the entire drivetrain, work roller tables and side guard manipulators as well as the complete electrical and automation equipment. With completion of the upgrade, the plant will be positioned to meet increasingly rigorous demands for productivity, flexibility and profitability.
 
Commissioning of the new plant is scheduled for December 2010.
