SMS Siemag Commissions 2nd CSP Caster for Essar Steel
08/24/2011 - Essar Steel recently put into operation the second strand of the Compact Strip Production plant supplied by SMS Siemag. A third strand is to be installed in 2012.
Essar Steel Ltd., India recently put into operation the second strand of the CSP® (Compact Strip Production) plant supplied by SMS Siemag, Germany.
The CSP plant’s first strand was started up earlier this year (March 31, 2011), and the third strand is to be installed in 2012. Completion of the third strand will make Essar Steel’s facility the first three-strand CSP plant worldwide with an annual capacity of 3.5 million tonnes of hot strip.
Production on the new second strand proceeded without any breakouts, with 75% of rated capacity achieved during commissioning. Essar Steel cast a sequence of twelve 200-tonne heats totaling 2,400 tonnes of liquid steel on the first day of commissioning. Operators also were able to successfully utilize thickness reduction LCR® (Liquid Core Reduction) and width adjustment on the first sequence.
Essar Steel can produce hot strip on the CSP plant in widths ranging from 950 to 1,680 mm and thicknesses from 1.0 to 25.4 mm. The product range covers carbon steels as well as pipe grades, silicon and dual phase steels.
SMS Siemag's scope of supply included the engineering, manufacture of the mechanical equipment, provision of the entire electrical and automation systems, as well as supervision of erection and commissioning. The X-Pact® automation system had been prepared with the Plug & Work process, which simulates the production sequence and allows automation functions to be tested and optimized prior to installation under realistic conditions.
