SSAB, Fortum to Initiate FEED Study on Hydrogen-Based Sponge Iron Plant
06/05/2023 - SSAB and Finnish energy company Fortum will undertake a front-end engineering design of a potential industrial-scale, hydrogen-reduced sponge iron plant, the companies have announced.
According to SSAB, the study, which also will look at the potential for a hydrogen production plant, is to be completed in the first quarter of 2024.
SSAB said the study arises from an ongoing joint research project, FFS – Towards Fossil-free Steel, which began in February 2021 and is supported by Business Finland.
