SSAB Marks Opening of Pilot-Scale Hydrogen Storage Facility
06/15/2022 - SSAB and its partners in its fossil-free steelmaking initiative are inaugurating an underground hydrogen storage facility, marking the start of a two-year trial.
In a statement, SSAB said the pilot-scale rock cavern storage facility is about 30 m below ground and can hold 100 m3 of hydrogen. SSAB hopes to apply learnings from the facility to a demonstration-scale storage facility that would be built in 2026.
"SSAB has the opportunity to transform our operations and cut 10% of Sweden’s total carbon dioxide emissions as well as 7% of Finland’s, and this will take us one step closer to our goal. The hydrogen storage facility is an important piece of the puzzle in ensuring stable steel production and a milestone in the development of HYBRIT," said SSAB chief technology officer Martin Pei.
