SSAB Turns to SMS group for Gas Atomization Plant
06/10/2026 - SMS group announced it has been selected by SSAB to provide a new gas atomization plant at its site in Oxelösund, Sweden.
The companies said the new plant will allow for industrial-scale metal powder output. This will allow SSAB to scale up its metal powder developed for 3D printing including SSAB AM Engineering’s steel power.
“With this powder atomization plant, we will be able to provide the market with advanced high-strength steel powders at industrial scale, specifically tailored for the demanding requirements of additive manufacturing,” said Jesper Vang, head of powder technology at SSAB.
SMS group said it designed the plant to minimize particle collisions during the atomization process through targeted gas recirculation. When combined with the induction furnace, inert gas atomization and powder handling, the system allows for production of powders with precise chemical compositions.
