SSC to Establish New Coil Center in Iwate Prefecture
08/26/2011 - SSC Co., Ltd. will acquire a new plant site in Iwate Prefecture to build a new coil center and establish a steel sheet processing base that improves delivery times, reduces transportation costs, and stabilizes supply of steel sheet to component makers.
SSC Co., Ltd. will acquire a new plant site with an area of 12,500 m2 in Iwate Prefecture. The company plans to build a new coil center there and establish a steel sheet processing base that improves delivery times, reduces transportation costs, and stabilizes supply of steel sheet to component makers.
With the new coil center, SSC joins with other component makers that have been moving into the Tohoku region in response to Toyota Motor Corp.’s promotion of the Keiretsu auto engine and auto body manufacturers to advance into the Tohoku region with the aim of enhancing its monozukuri (manufacturing based on highly skilled craftsmanship) in Japan. The region is regarded as Toyota’s third domestic manufacturing base.
SSC’s new coil center will feature one slitter with a processing capacity of 7000 tonnes/month at the start of operation, which is expected to occur in June 2012. It will be located near the Kanto Auto Works, Ltd. Iwate plant (Kanegasaki-cho, Isawa-gun, Iwate Prefecture), the Central Motor Co., Ltd. Miyagi plant (Ohira-mura, Kurokawa-gun, Miyagi Prefecture), and Toyota Motor Tohoku Corp. (Taiwa-cho, Kurokawa-gun, Miyagi Prefecture).
Quality and delivery capabilities that were accumulated in Nagoya will be transplanted to the Tohoku coil center to help create a central base of steel processing in the Tohoku region. For example, SSC’s “specification mismatch prevention system” will be introduced.
After establishing its main plant in Aichi Prefecture, SSC established SSC Kyushu Co., Ltd. in Fukuoka Prefecture to expand its coil center business and tailor welded blank (TWB) business to contribute to stable production at Toyota Motor Kyushu Inc. (Miyawaka City, Fukuoka Prefecture) and related auto component makers.
In accordance with Toyota Motor’s domestic production system in three areas, SSC will link its network of three bases resulting from the new coil center with Kashima Steel Works, and contribute to Toyota Motor’s production system based on the motto of SQCD (safety, quality, cost, and delivery).
SSC is owned by Kanpoh Steel Co., Ltd. (51%), Sumitomo Metal Industries (19%), Sumitomo Corp. (15%), and Sumikin Bussan Corp. (15%). Its main plant, which is capable of processing 30,000 tonnes/month, is in the Aichi Prefecture. The main plant of SSC Kyushu Co., Ltd., which is located in the Fukuoka Prefecture, is capable of processing 10,000 tonnes/month.
