Statutory Negotiations Lead to Temporary Lay-offs at Outokumpu’s Tornio Works

Outokumpu announced plans to temporarily lay off most of the employees at its Tornio Works in Finland following the recent conclusion of statutory negotiations at the facility. The company said the layoffs would be carried out either for a fixed period of time or in sequences until further notice.

The company said that it would temporarily cease production in April at the Kemi mine, at the Ferrochrome Works and in one of the meltshops. The approximately 330 employees that work at these units are to be laid off for a fixed period. Depending on the market situation, the company is planning to restart production in the autumn.

Employees working in other steel production lines, in maintenance and in support functions are to be temporarily laid off in sequences until further notice. This arrangement will cover about 1500 employees including office workers and top management. The minimum duration of the temporary lay-offs is two weeks in a quarter.

Tornio Works employs a total of 2350 people.

The company also reported that negotiations at its Outokumpu Stainless Tubular Products (OSTP) in Finland had resulted in the reduction of some 20 jobs in Pietarsaari and Veteli, most of which were retirement arrangements. Additionally, the company will temporarily lay off office workers in OSTP Pietarsaari for seven days and production employees in sequences for two weeks at minimum during the first half of the year.
