Steel Dynamics Taps SMS group for Process Automation Modernization

One of the upgrades includes the new X Pact® level 2 system with ProconTEL-based communication and the X-Pact Vision webHMI. SMS group said it also will provide the X-Pact PSC® model to provide a foundation for pass schedules.

“With this upgrade, we are strengthening the long-term capability of our Butler operations and ensuring that our customers receive consistently high-quality products,” said Randy Patterson, hot mill manager at SDI Butler.

The finishing mill will feature the X-Pact PCFC model which determines the setpoints for the continuous variable crown (CVC®) plus and work roll bending systems. For cooling, SMS group will provide its X-Pact cooling system control, the company said.

“Our level 2 systems ensure stable production at other SDI facilities, including Columbus and Sinton. With this project, SDI Butler will benefit from future-ready automation designed for sustained operational excellence,” said André Merten, project manager at SMS group.

The companies said the first coil production is scheduled for late 2026 while completion is targeted for early 2027.
