Mittal Steel Conveys Lake Vessels

16 June 2005 - Mittal Steel Co. has disposed of its bareboat charter interests in two lake vessels that provide raw materials to its steel works in Burns Harbor, Ind. The vessels were chartered by International Steel Group, which Mittal Steel Co. acquired on April 15.

15 June 2005 - ATI Allegheny Ludlum is increasing prices by 4 to 10% for nickel-based alloys, stainless steel super-ferritic alloys, stainless steel super-austenitic alloys, stainless steel high strength alloys, and for AL 332 and AL 334 alloys. The price increase applies to sheet, strip, Precision Rolled Strip®, and plate product forms. It is effective with new orders entered on or after June 13, 2005.

14 June 2005 - The dramatic increase in imports and import penetration of stainless steel bar and rod in the first quarter of 2005 raises red flags for U.S. producers, according to the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).

First Quarter Stainless Steel Imports Climb 37% Higher than 2004

14 June 2005 - Total stainless steel imports reached 182,350 tons through the first quarter of 2005 — 37% higher than the first quarter of 2004 — according to the latest statistical data released by the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA). Total specialty steel imports (including stainless, electrical, and tool steels) were 39% higher than the first quarter of 2004.

Universal Stainless Adjusts Prices, Surcharge Mechanism

07 June 2005 - Universal Stainless & Alloy Products, Inc. announced base price increases on all premium melted steels, including both vacuum arc remelted and electroslag remelted steels. Effective with shipments scheduled for June 13th, stainless steel remelted grades will increase 6%, and high strength low alloy remelted grades will increase 8%.

03 June 2005 - Carpenter Technology Corp. announced that its Specialty Alloys Operations unit it is increasing prices 5-10% on all premium melted alloys used in markets including aerospace, automotive, electronics, medical, power generation and oil and gas. The change takes effect immediately.

Steelworkers Renew Strike Mandate at AltaSteel

03 June 2005 - Members of the United Steelworkers' Local 5220 at Stelco Inc.'s Edmonton subsidiary, AltaSteel, have voted 97% in favor of renewing the strike mandate first granted to the local's bargaining committee last September during ongoing contract negotiations. The mandate had been renewed in February.

Stelco Revises Earnings Guidance

03 June 2005 - Stelco Inc. has adjusted its earnings expectations for the second quarter of 2005. The company says that while it continues to expect solid performance from a historical perspective, second quarter operating earnings are now expected to be considerably below the level of the first quarter of 2005. The decrease is attributed primarily to lower spot market prices, higher energy costs and the flow-through of higher-cost inventory produced in the first quarter.
