Tariffs Up, Import Quotas Down: U.K. Acts to Defend Steel Sector
03/19/2026 - The U.K. will lower its quota of tariff-free imported steel while doubling its tariffs on imports which exceed that quota, the U.K. government said, reported Reuters.
"Making steel in the U.K. is vital for national security, critical infrastructure and the wider economy,” said the U.K.’s Business Secretary Peter Kyle in a statement.
With these measures, the government would lower tariff-free import quotas by 60% while imports exceeding that quota will incur a 50% tariff beginning 1 July, Reuters reported.
